In the past, ‘a courtesan’ was a woman (often cultured, talented and beautiful, sometimes vetted by the Queen) kept in the royal palace to entertain the King. This could mean anything from sex to singing, dancing, reciting poetry, etc. (kind of ‘Geisha with the lots’). Sexism aside, quite often, this was coveted as a career. In the context of the Kama Sutra, ‘courtesan’ has a finer meaning, not just ‘prostitute’, even high-class prostitute.

Cả hai từ đều được dùng để nói đến mối quan hệ giữa hai người, nhóm người, quốc gia, yếu tố, vật thể. Ví dụ:

The relationship/relation between the police and the local community has improved.
I have established a gook working relationship/relation with my boss.
There is a strong relationship/relation between mental and physical health.

Tuy nhiên, trong những văn cảnh trên, relationship thường hay được dùng hơn so với relations.

Khác

Relationship được dùng để chỉ mối quan hệ tình cảm nam nữ. Relation không thể dùng thay thế được trong trường hợp này. Ví dụ:

Are you in a relationship?
She had a series of miserable relationships.
Money problems put a strain on their relationship.

Relation mang sắc thái trang trọng hơn và nghĩa khái quát hơn. Trong những cụm từ / thuật ngữ như: diplomatic relations, international relations, foreign relations, public relations, industrial relations, employment relations..., relationship không thể dùng để thay thế. (Lưu ý là relation luôn được dùng ở dạng số nhiều.)

Ngoài ra, relation còn có nghĩa là ‘họ hàng’, giống như relative, relationship không mang nghĩa này.
